Hi all! I've been looking for an answer to this question for a while for no real reason other than because I'm curious, so perhaps somebody here will know.
When writing foreign proper names (first and last) in Katakana, is there a standardised way to write each name, or can you just sound out your own name however you like? For example, my name is Sarah, so would I have to write it as 'セラ', 'セーラ', 'サラ' or could I just use whichever I prefer? Same question for last names, because I find many last names could be written in Katakana a variety of different ways. Is there a proper procedure for how each name is written? I've always wondered!
Standardised ways to write names exist, but.. There is standardised ways to write the most common names, although, it is still your name so I think you get to decide how you want to write it in katakana.
