In the lesson quiz question 9, what is the use of と in "たくさん勉強しないといけないので 大変です。" The answer doesn't make sense to me: "I have to study a lot, so it is going to be hard". I do not get the cause and effect in this sentence.

Let me break this sentence down.
たくさん べんきょうしないといけない (TAKUSAN BENKYOUSHINAITO IKENAI)
= I have to study a lot.
= It is hard.
The verb form (～ないといけない/must do, have to do) is introduced in
Course 5 Lesson 3 (Grammar Part: 1)
. This と is different from the if-then statement (
Course 5 Lesson 1 (Grammar Part: 5)
はやく ねないといけない (HAYAKU NENAITO IKENAI) = I have to go to bed early.
やさいを たべないといけない (YASAI O TABENAITO IKENAI) = I must eat vegetables.
I hope this helps :)
