We use MAE (ago, before) to say "quarter to (time)".
For example; 1) quarter to four (3:45) = よじ じゅうごふん まえ (YO JI JUUGO FUN MAE) As for "quarter past four", we simply say; 2) よじ じゅうごふん (YO JI JUUGO FUN) = 4:15 I hope this helps, Kanako @ YesJapan Teacher

If you think about it, there's not really a "quarter 'till" here technically. It's still "fifteen minutes" and so if you are saying it's 4:15, then why add another word on the time if already you have stated the fifteen minutes? I don't know of an equivalent specifically to the word "quarter" in Japanese, especially pertaining to time. That's why there would be no equivalent, like say: 四時十五分後 「よじじゅうごふんあと」 because after the 分 「ふん」 we've already stated it. I think I just overstated myself.. :( I'm sorry.. I'm bored, lol.
Anywho, Ganbatte everyone!!

![]() member since 2002 Apr 16 Questions: 1 Comments: 9 | Good question... for some reason the language evolved apparently with just a "half" word and no "quarter" word other than the literal "one fourth" it seems. Oh well. Good ol' interesting Japanese :)
